Job Description

The New Tecumseth Public Library is now seeking a people-oriented individual to work in all three Branches as a Part-Time Circulation Assistant.  The successful applicant will be required to work with a very high degree of accuracy, exercise tact and independent judgment in accordance with library policy and possess a demonstrated respect and appreciation for patrons of all ages.  The successful applicant should possess the ability to balance multi-faceted job responsibilities in a busy environment.  Library or public service experience is a minimum requirement for this position, and familiarity with computers and database applications is preferred.

It is anticipated that this position will also be available for casual fill-in for daytime, evenings and Saturdays, and should be available to work at all 3 branches and have transportation to the same.  This part-time position pays $ 17.92  / hour to start. Skills Required

JOB SUMMARY:

 

Under supervision, performs routine library tasks as assigned and according to established procedures.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Under supervision, may be responsible for the operation of the Circulation Desk.
  • Performs automated checkin/check out of library materials.
  • Handles money at the Circulation Desk including fines, photocopying and sale of materials.
  • May be required to telephone reserve requests.
  • May be required to process and repair library materials.
  • May assist with preparation of lotted materials.
  • May assist other staff with special projects or children’s programmes.
  • May operate office equipment such as photocopier.
  • Shelves library materials and does shelf reading.
  • Reader’s Advisory under the direction of senior staff.
  • Other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

 

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING:

 

  • Secondary School Graduation or above.
  • At least 1 year of work experience.
  • Good communication skills and public relation skills.
  • Basic math and computer skills essential.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY:

 

  • Responsible for participating in the effective day to day operation of a branch.
  • Adheres to all legislation, policies and procedures applicable to the position (e.g. Health & Safety, Human Rights, etc.)

 



COMPLEXITY/CONSEQUENCE OF ERRORS:

 

  • Consequence of error is limited, as difficult situations are reported to a supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

  • Works part time hours per two week period.
  • Works in a rapidly changing and automated environment.
  • Works in a non-smoking environment.
  • Work is occasionally stressful when dealing with the public.
  • Manual dexterity needed to operate office equipment.
  • Required to lift and carry library materials and equipment (to a maximum of 40 lbs.) required occasionally.
  • Must have transportation since some travel to branch libraries may be necessary.
